Synovial Fluid Analysis Can Find the Causes of Joint Disorders

Synovial fluid or joint fluid is a thick fluid that lubricates the joints of the body so it is easy to move. Synovial fluid analysis can be done on someone who has joint problems so that the cause can be known. Joint disorders can be marked from the initial symptoms of stiffness or joint pain when moving. Synovial Fluid Analysis Procedure

Analysis of synovial fluid or joint fluid can be recommended when complaints of joint pain arise, or swelling in the joints of unknown causes. The accompanying symptoms are generally in the form of redness, or obstruction of movement in certain body parts. Meanwhile, if inflammation is affected by infection in synovial fluid, it can turn greenish yellow. When the synovial fluid turns reddish, bleeding in the joints generally occurs. In addition, the level of viscosity of synovial fluid was also examined. Because, in patients with arthritis, synovial fluid will be more dilute due to decreased hyaluronic acid production.

Need to Look Before and After Analysis

  • Using blood thinning drugs, such as warfarin.
  • Undergo medications that can slow blood clotting such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
  • Too little synovial fluid in the joint.
  • Just underwent cortisone injection therapy in the joint.
  • Having a skin infection in the area around the inflamed joint.
After analyzing synovial fluid and the cause of joint pain is known, the doctor will recommend treatment, either by administering drugs, physiotherapy, or surgery. After synovial fluid analysis is performed, it is important to keep the joint area clean and dry to avoid infection. Pain and discomfort in the joints may be felt for several days after synovial fluid analysis is performed. To reduce the discomfort felt after this action, pain medication may be given by a doctor. Make sure that you only take painkillers recommended by your doctor because some pain relievers like aspirin can increase the risk of bleeding.
